Chapter 9

Alcibiades in Gaol: Thesmophoriazusae

Thesmophoriazusae is one of Aristophanes’ most amusing plays when read at any level of understanding, but it will have been far more so to contemporaries who were in a position to recognize and appreciate in detail the interplay of the plot with the histories and idiosyncrasies of the likely κωμῳδούμενοι (who include Alcibiades, Pericles and Tissaphernes). To paraphrase, but to contradict, a recent critic, it is a political play, and was designed from the very first to be. It is no more a “drama about drama” than is Midsummer Night’s Dream or Hamlet, and Euripides’ reputation as one who was inimical to women (cf. Ar. Lys. 283) is a cover for something quite different.
